U.S. Open: Which big names missed the cut at Shinnecock Hills?

Several notable golfers missed the cut at the halfway stage of the third men's major of the season in Long Island, New York.

The 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills will continue this weekend without some big names.

At the halfway stage of the third men's major of the year, America's Wyndham Clark is out in front.

Clark, 33, has played superbly over the first 36 holes at the Long Island layout and has reached a mind-boggling seven-under par.

The four-time PGA Tour winner, who won the U.S. Open in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club, has some quality players alongside him at the top of the leaderboard.

His nearest challengers are fellow major winners Matt Fitzpatrick, Collin Morikawa and the unheralded Sam Stevens. Tom Kim is also nipping at his heels.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy rode the Shinnecock Hills rollercoaster on Friday but comfortably made the cut at level par.

World number one and pre-tournament favourite, Scottie Scheffler, is also safely through to the weekend on the same score as McIlroy.

At the other end of the leaderboard, though, some big names crashed out after 36 holes.

The LIV Golf man has now missed three consecutive cuts in the major championships this season.

Rounds of 70 and 75 saw DeChambeau agonisingly miss the number by one.

DeChambeau is unlikely to be back in action in a competitive environment until next month's Open.

Viktor Hovland +5

The Norwegian is having another difficult season.

Hovland only has two top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 2026.

He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, too.

Billy Horschel +5

The American was among those to miss out by one.

Rickie Fowler +5

Another disappointing weekend for the popular PGA Tour pro, who didn't qualify for The Masters and finished in a share of 60th at the PGA Championship.

Patrick Reed +5

The former LIV Golf man was considered by many as a dark horse to win the 2026 U.S. Open.

Reed has a pair of wins on the DP World Tour this season and also finished inside the top 15 at The Masters and PGA Championship.

He needed to birdie the last to make the cut but his golf ball grazed the edge.

Shane Lowry +6

The 2019 Open champion rallied early and was nicely positioned to make the cut heading into the back nine, but a costly double bogey at the 11th and two more dropped shots at the 15th and 17th proved fatal for the Irishman.

Jon Rahm +6

Spain's Jon Rahm was in contention after 18 holes and at one point on Friday morning was four-under for the championship.

But the 2021 U.S. Open champion collapsed like a pack of cards on the back nine, dropping six shots from the 12th to miss the cut by three.

Patrick Cantlay +6

The world number 34 will rue costly back-to-back double bogeys in round one.

For the most part, the American was steady but he must pack his bags and re-group for one last shot at glory at Royal Birkdale.

Cameron Smith +6

Smith had missed six straight major championship cuts before he snapped the streak at the PGA Championship last month.

The Aussie, who recently made the difficult decision to sack his golf coach after working with Grant Field since he was nine years old, recorded rounds of 75 and 71 at Shinnecock Hills.

A real shame for the Aussie, who was making his 100th consecutive appearance in a major.

Brooks Koepka +10

Koepka made the turn on Friday with a great chance of making the cut, but played his final nine holes in six-over par,

Yikes.
