Bryson DeChambeau continues to refuse interviews after shocking PGA Championship start
Bryson DeChambeay declines media interviews once again, as he has a day to forget at Aronimink.
Bryson DeChambeau endured a nightmare opening round at the PGA Championship, and afterwards the two-time U.S. Open champion once again declined to speak to the media.
According to Sky Sports Golf, it has emerged DeChambeau’s camp has advised the LIV Golf superstar to not conduct any interviews at Aronimink.
DeChambeau refused media interviews on the eve of the first round, and he then did exactly the same on Thursday.
The exact reasoning behind that decision is unknown, but likely down to avoiding potential questions surrounding his LIV Golf future, with his current contract set to expire in a few months time.
The silence came after a hugely disappointing performance from DeChambeau on Thursday.
DeChambeau signed for a disastrous six-over-par 76, his worst score relative to par in PGA Championship history.
DeChambeau's only birdie of the day came at the final hole, offering little consolation after a round that included five bogeys and a double bogey.
It also continued a worrying run in the majors this season following his late collapse at The Masters, where a triple bogey on the final hole contributed to him missing the cut by two shots.
Although DeChambeau remained powerful from the tee and gained nearly a stroke on the field with his driving in the first round at Aronimink, the rest of his game struggled badly.
His touch around the greens was particularly costly as he leaked almost four strokes, while a cold putter compounded the damage.
A first round of 76 came as a surprise to many given DeChambeau had finished third at LIV Golf Virginia only last week.
DeChambeau has also finished no worse than tied fourth in the past three renewals of the PGA Championship.
However, his distance control was inconsistent throughout the first round, repeatedly leaving himself in difficult scrambling situations.
On a demanding golf course already punishing small mistakes, that proved to be a losing formula.
The poor start now leaves the 32-year-old American in serious danger of missing another major cut.
He's currently sat outside the top 120 on the leaderboard.
At The Masters last month, rounds of 76 and 74 saw him finish six over par and two shots outside the cut line.
It was also a frustrating opening day for Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who bogeyed his final four holes in a four-over 74.
Unlike DeChambeau, McIlroy faced the media afterwards, bluntly describing his round as “s**t”, while admitting he is continuing to struggle heavily with his driver.
