Rickie Fowler has opened up on why he has struggled so much the past couple of seasons on the PGA Tour as he bids to get his game back on track at this week's US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.

Fowler, 32, may have missed five cuts on the PGA Tour so far in 2021 but he has been handed a lifeline at golf's second major of the year with a special invite into the tournament by the PGA of America.

Once in the top five in the world rankings, Fowler now finds himself in a lowly 128th after missing three of his last five cuts on the circuit.

As for potential excuses for his on-course struggles, Fowler admits "you can pick them all."

He added: "It's been a bit of everything. A big part of it was playing too much golf swing, which needed to be done early on. But I think it went on for too long. Now it's back to playing golf and hitting shots."

But despite the American's rapid fall from grace since leaving Tiger Woods' former long-time golf coach Butch Harmon in 2019, the five-time PGA Tour winner - now alongside golf coach John Tiller - is confident he will soon turn the tide.

"It's not like he [Tillery] is giving me bad information, or we're working on the wrong things," admitted Fowler.

"We're all out here to try to be better. Sometimes it doesn't work out as quickly as you want. It's unfortunate that it has taken this long.

"At the same time, it's been humbling. You learn a lot when you're at tough points. These are things that can make or break you. They test you. I'm still upright and moving forward."
