Golf fans have been left disgusted after groups took in the region of five and half hours to complete their second rounds of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The BMW PGA is considered by many as the DP World Tour's flagship event of the season.

Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg teed off at 2pm UK time and finished in darkness at 7.30pm.

The biggest waits on the tee came at the end with par-5s to finish on 17 and 18.

During the final hour of coverage, at least four groups could be seen on each of those holes at one time.

Spotlights were positioned to the right side of the 18th green in order to let McIlroy's group finish up.

McIlroy two-putted for a birdie on the 18th hole to card a 71 and make the halfway cut on the number at 1-under par.

That sees the World No.2 lie nine strokes off the pace heading into the third round.

McIlroy told a pool of reporters after the round that the pace of play at Wentworth was a "complete s*** show."

Swedish duo Aberg and Sebastian Soderberg are out in front on 10-under par.

Aberg birdied the 18th for a 66, while Soderberg eagled the last to shoot an exceptional 64.

Hovland also birdied the 18th but has plenty of work to do at 5-under par.

Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka were the last group to finish up their round in complete darkness.

Fleetwood two-putted for birdie on the 18th to card a 66 and move just one stroke behind at 9-under par.

Groups who failed to complete their second rounds will return at 7.15am on Saturday.

Thankfully for Luke Donald, all 12 of the players in his European Ryder Cup team made the weekend.

"It's an absolute disgrace," Sky Sports Golf's Paul McGinley repeatedly said during the broadcast in the second round.

"4 hours 40 minutes is about the average these days for a three-ball, and even that is too long.

"They have got to find ways to speed up the pace of play. Enough is enough now."

Here's how golf fans reacted:

"The pace of play is a joke! Sort it out."

"Pace of play is disgusting at BMW PGA."

"OMG such a turn off at the PGA."

"Snooze fest at Wentworth today."

"God knows what the officials have been doing today and yesterday."

"What a shambles pace of play is at the BMW PGA. Get this sorted."
