If his name wasn't already in the conversation for Masters contenders coming into this weekend, Chris Gotterup's surely is now.

The 26-year-old American, playing in just his third full season, showed steely resolve in one of the hottest atmospheres on tour at TPC Scottsdale to overhaul Hideki Matsuyama and claim his fourth PGA tour victory – and second this year so far.

The win is by far the most high-profile of his career so far, as well as the most lucrative. The Rutgers alum will pocket a cool $1.7m  for his win, and jumps to a career high world ranking of fifth.

Even more refreshingly, Gotterup claimed a win as one of the tour's true equipment free agents, gaming a setup as varied and unexpected as any we've seen win so far this year.

A mixture of TaylorMade, PING and Bridgestone clubs make up the backbone of Gotterup's bag, making for a line-up that's fascinating to read and perhaps sheds a little light on the clubs most tour pros would really like to play if they weren't being paid hefty sums of money to vouch for others.

Whether he'll remain a free agent for long after such a high-profile win, of course, remains to be seen.

Read on as we break down Gotterup's full line-up.

Driver: PING G440 LST

PING's G440 LST is firmly entrenched as one of the most popular drivers among the tour's equipment free agents. Jason Day has one in the bag, as does noted Callaway player Phil Mickelson— preferring it for the balance it strikes between generating distance and forgiveness.

The G440 LST has been widely acclaimed as one of the best, if not the best driver released in 2025 so far, with reviewers and tour pros alike heaping praise on the stability it provides players who generate faster clubhead speeds. It's perhaps no surprise then that Gotterup is one of the top 10 players on tour in driving distance.

Mini driver: TaylorMade BRNR Mini Copper

Mini drivers become more ubiquitous on tour with every passing week, and Gotterup became an adopter of the revived genre late last year, reworking the top end of his back to remove his long-used TaylorMade RSi 1-iron and put a mini driver in instead.

Gotterup's mini driver of choice is TaylorMade's retro-styled BRNR Mini Copper, a model also beloved of Rickie Fowler. Like his big stick, his comes fitted with Project X's HZRDUS Black shaft.

5-wood: TaylorMade Qi35

Giving Gotterup a fast, forgiving second option off both the tee and the fairway, the Qi35 is a wood that has instantly become popular on tour since its introduction earlier this year. The only fairway wood in Gotterup's bag, the American games it in a 5-wood spec when he needs a higher ball flight and more workability on his longer shots.

Irons: Bridgestone 220 MB

Bridgestone re-entered the club game with a bang late last year, introducing both muscle back and cavity back irons that combine relatively unassuming looks with performance and a price tag as impressive as eachother. The 220 MB, as the look suggests, is the more player-oriented of the two, with a classic blade profile that wouldn't look out of place in the bag of noted Bridgestone enthusiast Tiger Woods.

Gotterup is, to our knowledge, the only tour pro currently gaming the 220 MB irons, and his win delivers the Japanese brand's clubs their first win on tour since 2019.

Wedges: TaylorMade MG5

Gotterup games a combination of TaylorMade wedges beyond his 9 iron, preferring an aggressive set-up and doing away from a pitching wedge altogether in favour of a 46-degree wedge from the brand's new MG5 range.

Like most players, Gotterup increases his lofts incrementally from there, playing a standard bounce wedge for versatility up to his 56-degree wedge, and implementing a low-bounce 60 degree the utmost degree of control on short pitches and chips on tight lies.

Putter: TaylorMade Tour Spider X

TaylorMade's Spider remains by far the winning-est putter in the professional game in the last few years, with Spider putters capping off an astonishing 24 wins on the PGA Tour since the beginning of last season (15 of which, of course, have belonged to either Scottie or Rory).

Like Scheffler, Gotterup has opted for the Tour Spider X, fitted with an L-neck which promotes a more controlled, less arced swing path and aids alignment and accuracy.

Golf Ball: Bridgestone Tour B X

The Bridgestone Tour B X quietly sits among the tour's most beloved balls—not just holding the illustrious title of the ball gamed by the Big Cat himself, but also the choice of big name free agents like Jason Day and Matt Kuchar—the former of which actually aided Bridgestone with the development of the ball alongside Tiger.

The B X is the most aggressive ball in the Bridgestone Tour line-up, designed for swings in excess of 105mph and designed to squeeze every drop of distance out of those with high-end clubhead speeds. It does so with a slightly firmer feel than the adjacent Tour B XS, while still delivering the spin and control the very best players demand around the greens.

Newly released for 2026, the revised Tour B X features Bridgestone's new VeloSurge core technology, which Bridgestone says helped players of all levels see an increase of 2.3 mph in ball speed and 8.7 yards in distance in testing.
