Tommy Fleetwood says he's dreaming of winning the 151st Open Championship in memory of his late mother.

Fleetwood's mother, Sue, died aged 60 last July. Understandably, the Englishman stepped away from the game for a while.

When he returned, he picked his first victory in nearly three years at the Nedbank Challenge on the European DP World Tour.

His tears as he walked off the green last November in South Africa could've been mistaken for ones of undiluted happiness.

But they revealed the emotion hitting Fleetwood all at once. "It was just one of those moments," he previously told the Guardian.

He added: "Mum had supported me through all the s*** in 2021, when I was playing badly. Simple messages like: 'You'll have a good day tomorrow.' Then the week that I win without her..."

Fast-forward to July 2023 and Fleetwood is about to tee it up at Royal Liverpool in an Open Championship for the second time in his career.

He made his Open debut here in 2014, the same year Rory McIlroy lifted the Claret Jug, and is looking forward to more of the support 'where it feels very, very close to home'.

Fleetwood told reporters on 19 July:

"I've imagined it about a million times probably. Winning a major is a dream, or winning The Open is a huge, huge dream. No matter where that is, that's always something I've visualized and always thought about.
"But then again, having the opportunity to do it so close to where you grew up is something that's very unique and very special.
"For sure I've pictured it a lot and visualized it a lot; just haven't done it yet in person, so that's hopefully the next thing."

Asked about his mother, Fleetwood said it will be the one-year anniversary of Sue's death on Friday.

How is he doing? How is his father doing?

Fleetwood said:

"My dad is great. He's done really, really well, so that's been nice to see. It'll be different -- well, it'll be a year on Friday. We know that that's coming up. It would be nice to think she's watching over.
"Yeah, it'll be a special event. I would love to play well and I would love to sort of give myself a chance come Saturday and Sunday and have something to aim for in that sense.
"But everybody is doing really well, and that's all you can do. I have a great family and a lot of support, and my dad is out here today, and I think the best thing is seeing how well he's doing and obviously give him something to enjoy watching this week."

Fleetwood is playing the first 36 holes of this Open alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Adam Scott

"I enjoy playing golf with them," he said. "It's a really nice three-ball for me.

"[I am] happy that I sort of remain in like the groups, like the TV groups if you like, and I would like to stay there for as long as possible."
