Bob MacIntyre forced his way into a share of the halfway lead in brutal conditions as Storm Amy battered the Fife coast on day 2 of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The star-studded field had their skills tested to the limits by heavy rain and winds gusting at close to 40mph, and the forecast for Saturday makes for grim reading as conditions are expected to get far worse.
There is a genuine chance that play will not be possible on day 3 as the winds are projected to reach 50mph and beyond. If that is the case, the tournament is likely to be reduced to 54 holes, assuming Mother Nature allows play on Sunday.
The Old Course at St Andrews appeared to be the worst hit by the storm and struggled to drain the water from the fairways as quickly as Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, forcing play to be suspended with several groups still on all three layouts.
Ryder Cup hero MacIntyre defied the elements that hit hard over the second half of his round, the Scot delighting the hardy locals with a 6-under 66 at Kingsbarns that swept him to 12-under overall.
"It was almost a perfect round of golf, especially once the weather came in," said MacIntyre. "I just golfed the ball really well, and thought I controlled my flights really well.

"It's difficult when it gets this windy, it's hard to hit the ball good with the wind. So I was having to try and fight the wind on certain holes and wasn't comfortable. But I made some beautiful shots and putted solidly in the wind."
MacIntyre is tied at the top with veteran South African Richard Sterne, who fired a 67 on the Old Course at St Andrews, while 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen is one shot back after a 68 at Kingsbarns.
MacIntyre's European team-mate Matt Fitzpatrick is well placed on 8-under, one stroke ahead of three-time winner and defending champion Tyrrell Hatton as well as Tommy Fleetwood.
Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is also at 8-under, but he still had two holes of his second round to play when play was suspended shortly after 4pm due to a waterlogged course.
However, there was much confusion around all three courses as, due to the high winds and incessant rain, many of the players did not hear the klaxons and continued playing!
Dustin Johnson just tried to hit a 3 wood from 192 yards and stone cold topped it!

That is quite easily the most relatable shot he’s ever hit 😂@dunhilllinks @DPWorldTour @SkySportsGolf pic.twitter.com/jj2tuern62
One of the big names to suffer was Dustin Johnson, who was one off the lead after his opening 64 but the LIV Golf star tumbled down the leaderboard with a 77 which he capped with a triple-bogey 8 at his final hole.
The former Masters and US Open champion was desperate to get his second round finished despite the foul weather, but he played his last six hole in 6-over par and also stone-cold topped a 3-wood at the 7th hole.
Johnson's LIV Golf colleague Patrick Reed is on 5-under after rounds of 69 and 70.
Around a quarter of the field had uncompleted second rounds when play was official called off for the day just before 5:30pm, and it now looks likely that they won't get back out until Sunday morning.
Tournament organiser are, however, hopeful that they can resume play at 8am on Saturday morning.
