American World No.1 Nelly Korda finds herself four strokes adrift of the lead after 18 holes of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
Korda went round Fields Ranch East in Texas in level par 72 on Thursday after hitting two bogeys and two birdies.
"I was hitting it well off the tee [and] into the greens," Korda said. "And I just didn't really give myself too many great looks.
"But I played pretty solid, I think, for the first day of a major. I mean, the pins were tough out there today."
The 26-year-old revealed on the eve of the major she hurt her neck playing a shot out of the rough in her practice round.
She told reporters that the injury is on the mend although she has found it difficult to sleep this week.
Korda, who is winless this season, played the first round with wearing kinesiology tape.
Thitikul hit the front with a 68.
The Thai golfer is chasing her first major title and could overtake Korda as the number one player in the world with a win this week.
Her round contained six birdies and one double bogey.
The KPMG Women's PGA Championship has a total prize purse of $12m.
England's Charley Hull and Georgia Hall were among the later starters on day one.
Hull was 4-over par after 10 holes.
