Jordan Spieth addresses Ryder Cup prospects ahead of The Open
Multiple PGA Tour winner Jordan Spieth says he'll be 'okay' if he misses out on a Ryder Cup spot as the goal was always 'far-fetched' this season.
Jordan Spieth says he'll be 'okay' if he misses out on a spot on the US Ryder Cup team as it was a 'far-fetched' goal in 2025.
Spieth comes into The Open Championship here at Royal Portrush knowing he needs a big result for many reasons.
For one, the multiple PGA Tour winner is currently 48th in the FedEx Cup.
His standing means he is currently safe for the playoffs, but only the top 50 are exempt for all of next season's signature events.
And Spieth is also way down the pecking order in the US Ryder Cup standings.
The three-time major champion is currently 26th on the points list and will likely need a captain's pick from Keegan Bradley if he is to make his sixth appearance at the biennial showdown.
Spieth has an overall record of 8-7-3 in the contest and is particularly strong in match-play.
But should Bradley decide not to select the 31-year-old, Spieth admitted he would be 'okay' with sitting this one out as the goal seemed far-fetched at the beginning of the season.
He told Golf Channel ahead of this week's Open he would love to be at Bethpage Black, adding: "And if I'm not there, it's okay because, in all reality, it was a far-fetched goal.
"I started late. I wasn't in all the elevated events. I didn't know how I'd come back from the injury. It's been a good year regardless, and it'd be a great way to cap it off."
Spieth was referring to the fact he was forced wait until February to make his first start on the PGA Tour after undergoing surgery last August to repair his damaged left wrist.
He sustained the injury in 2023 whilst playing with his son Sammy but decided against going under the knife because he didn't want to spend a protracted period on the sidelines.
A recent rib injury that morphed into back spasms also didn't help matters. Spieth was forced to withdraw from a PGA Tour event last month for the very first time in his career at the Travelers Championship.
Spieth is playing the first two rounds of The Open alongside Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland.
