A cameraman produced one of the lighter moments of the day at the Memorial Tournament after sprinting to keep Rory McIlroy in shot during the second round at Muirfield Village.

McIlroy was seen hurrying up the 17th hole on Friday as he attempted to catch up with playing partner Justin Thomas.

Not wanting to lose track of one of golf's biggest stars, the Golf Channel's PGA Tour cameraman immediately broke into stride and followed him, creating a humorous scene that was quickly picked up by fans.

The brief dash proved to be one of the few highlights of an otherwise frustrating afternoon for the Northern Irishman.

McIlroy made a promising start, picking up two birdies through his opening five holes before reaching the turn in one-under-par after dropping a shot at the eighth.

At that stage he had moved to two-under for the tournament and appeared well placed to make a move up the leaderboard.

However, his challenge unravelled on the back nine.

A costly double bogey at the 13th after finding trouble off the tee halted his momentum, and McIlroy struggled to recover.

He played his final six holes in three-over par to sign for a disappointing two-over 74.

The result leaves the six-time major champion at one-over par for the tournament and facing a significant weekend challenge.

McIlroy is joined on the same score by world number one Scottie Scheffler, who also endured a difficult second round.

The defending champion carded a level-par 72, a round that included an uncharacteristic shank from a greenside bunker.

Neither player has ruled themselves out of contention, but both trail leader J.T. Poston by 10 shots heading into the weekend.

Poston surged to the top of the leaderboard with a superb seven-under 65 to reach nine-under par, one stroke clear of Ryan Gerard, who posted a 69.

Sam Burns sits solo third at six-under, while Tommy Fleetwood slipped back after a 73 but remains in fourth place at four-under alongside Eric Cole.

McIlroy is still searching for a maiden victory at Jack Nicklaus' prestigious event despite recording 30 PGA Tour titles during his career.

Scheffler, meanwhile, is attempting to become the first player since Tiger Woods to win three consecutive Memorial Tournament titles.

Woods achieved the feat in 2001, but Scheffler will need a significant turnaround over the final 36 holes to keep that dream alive.

The cut fell at five-over par, ending the week early for a number of notable names including Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Bob MacIntyre, Ben Griffin and Rickie Fowler.
