Paige Spiranac leapt to the defence of PGA Tour star Justin Thomas after hot mics captured an expletive aimed at newly-crowned US Open champion Wyndham Clark during the opening round of the Travelers Championship.

Thomas asked Clark to mark his golf ball on the green at TPC River Highlands and the two-time major champion had a witty, NSFW response.

It was an amusing moment as Clark was 80 yards away from the green.

"Guy wins one f---ing US Open and I have to mark it from 80 yards," chirped Thomas.

To this writer it was immediately clear that Thomas was jokingly trying to put Clark in his place. That was then and this is now.

Others were not so sure and called out Thomas. The moment was clipped and re-shared multiple times but it appears the PGA Tour social media folk decided to take it down.

"Just poking fun at a friend," Thomas later wrote. "We had a blast today. I wanted him to hear that."

Paige also defended Thomas by saying:

"It's crazy you have to even say this because some people are mad. Keep the trash talk coming! So many people like seeing you guys have fun out there."

Thomas ended up shooting a level par 70 in the opening round of the designated event whereas Clark posted a 68.

Clark later told the media how crazy his week has been since claiming his maiden major championship at Los Angeles Country Club.

He's run into multiple celebrities over the past seven days who wanted to snap a picture.

"Stuff like that obviously you don't think about when you're finishing on the 18th hole at a U.S. Open, he said.

"You don't think about that, and then happens it's pretty cool."

The first day of the Travelers Championship also saw some pretty remarkable things happening on the golf course.

Rory McIlroy also claimed the first ever hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career. McIlroy later said he threw away his golf ball, saying he didn't care about sentiment and he'd rather win trophies.
