Scottie Scheffler is closing in on a Tiger Woods record many thought would never fall
Scottie Scheffler reaches the halfway mark in chasing an ‘unbreakable’ Tiger Woods record.
PGA Tour fans have long believed that some of Tiger Woods’ records were simply untouchable — achievements so dominant they would stand for generations. But Scottie Scheffler is now forcing a rethink.
This week, Scheffler, 29, will quietly reach a milestone that underlines just how extraordinary his current run has been.
Regardless of how he performs at The American Express, the runaway World No.1 will mark his 141st consecutive week at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) — exactly halfway to one of Woods’ most revered records.
Scheffler, a four-time major champion who can complete the career grand slam at the US Open this June, is currently more than seven points clear of second-place Rory McIlroy in the OWGR.
Woods famously spent 281 straight weeks as World No.1 between June 2005 and October 2010, a stretch many assumed would never be seriously threatened.
Scheffler’s ongoing reign, which began on 21 May 2023, is now closing in on that mark at an eye-opening pace.

He is just under halfway to Tiger's record of 281 weeks in a row-- which means he would have that record on Monday, October 16th 2028 pic.twitter.com/84fEElsvUo
According to data tracked by the X account TrackingScheffler, the American would need to retain his place at the summit until 16 October 2028 to surpass Woods outright.
And while that still remains a formidable task for the 19-time PGA Tour winner, it no longer feels unrealistic given Scheffler’s sustained dominance.
The 29-year-old has won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award in each of the past four seasons, a level of consistency that has separated him from the rest of the field and kept challengers at bay in the rankings.
There are still Tiger records that appear far more daunting, none bigger than Woods also owning the record for total weeks at World No.1 with an astonishing 683.
Scheffler currently sits on 175, meaning he would likely need close to another decade at the top to overhaul that particular benchmark — a feat that still feels almost mythical.
Scheffler returns to competitive action this week at The American Express as a red-hot 5/2 favourite.
Victory in his PGA Tour season opener would bring up his 20th career PGA Tour title, moving him to tied-35th on the all-time wins list alongside legends such as Hale Irwin and Greg Norman.
Judging by his early practice in California this week, we might as well just chalk it up now:
Yeah Scottie by a million this week
