Collin Morikawa wants Ryder Cup teammate to throw "massive fist pump" in player's face
Collin Morikawa implored his United States Ryder Cup teammate Cameron Young to show some much-needed emotion at Bethpage Black.
Collin Morikawa has urged his US Ryder Cup teammate Cameron Young to show some much-needed passion at Bethpage Black.
Keegan Bradley's Team USA has four rookies in the squad, with US Open champ JJ Spaun, Ben Griffin, Russell Henley and Young making their debuts.
Young has always had a reputation as being somewhat reserved, rarely showing emotion on the golf course.
Morikawa told reporters on Wednesday even when Young secured his first PGA Tour title in August the golfer still did not even crack a smile.
The two-time major champion wants that to change this week. In fact, he wants the 28-year-old to go crazy given he is playing in front of his home fans.
Young, who was born in Westchester County, New York, had the 2025 Ryder Cup circled when he was a teenager in 2014.
"I would love to see Cam Young just throw a massive fist pump in someone's face," Morikawa said.
"I would love it. I mean, home state, home crowd, red, white and blue, played on the Junior Ryder Cup.
"He's a fiery competitor. I've known Cam for a long time. He's been very stoic, right. We're deep competitors.
"Whether you see that or not through the TV or through watching us play, he wants to whoop some butt.
"Yeah, I would love to see a nice little putter raise, undercut, fist-pump."
For his part, Young acknowledged that a situation may arise this week whereby he loses his mind.
"Especially, you know, at this venue in front of this crowd," Young said.
"You know, there's nothing I would love more than to give myself an opportunity to see what I am capable of on that front.
"But you know, the real answer is, I've got prep to do. We've been working this week.
"You know, none of that matters unless I have an opportunity to do something that warrants that kind of emotional response, and that's more what I'm focused on than what's going to happen."
Morikawa also implored the US fans to up the ante.
Over the first two days of Ryder Cup week, Morikawa said he has experienced an atmosphere that is "kinda tame".
