Matt Wallace defied his Ryder Cup heartbreak to send his best wishes to the European team heading to Bethpage in a series of messages on social media.

Wallace broke down in tears after losing out to Thriston Lawrence on the final day of the Omega European Masters on Sunday as the realisation dawned that his last remaining chance of sneaking into Luke Donald's team had disappeared.

The Englishman had arrived in Crans Montana clinging to the slim hope that a successful defence of his title could have been enough to persuade Donald to hand him a captain's pick the following day.

"I will never give up on the Ryder Cup," said Wallace in his emotion-charged post-round interview in Switzerland, and he received a call from the European captain shortly afterwards.

"I called him 10 or 15 minutes after that emotional interview he did in Crans," Donald revealed after naming his six captain's picks on Monday. "I felt very emotional for him. It just shows to me what the Ryder Cup means to these guys and how they are trying to desperately make the team and be a part of it.

"You know, Matt has made no secret of that over the years, and he's come very close a number of times. I think that call was tough but to be honest they are all pretty tough. I think these guys all really wanted to be on that team."

Wallace put his disappointment to one side to congratulate the 12 players who will be defending the Ryder Cup in New York later this month, insisting he would be cheering on Team Europe from home.

"Big congratulations and best of luck to Europe’s Ryder Cup team heading for Bethpage," he wrote on his X account. "I’ll be watching and supporting and know the boys can bring the trophy home.

"For me now, this chapter closes. A new one is just around the corner. I feel my game has been in good shape over the last few months. I’ve put so much into this campaign and I made getting to Bethpage, a course I know well, my goal. Ultimately it wasn’t to be for me this time.

"I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of the support and messages after yesterday. It was a combination of any final chance slipping away and coming up short in a tournament I have come to love and was desperate to defend.

"Thriston was awesome yesterday and deserved the win."

Donald named his six captain's picks on 1 September.

The former World No.1 opted to experience and continuity. There is only one change, with Rasmus Hojgaard replacing his twin brother Nicolai.

Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Matthew Fitzpatrick were Donald's selections.

They joined Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton and the aforementioned Hojgaard.

Wallace wasn't the only player left disappointed.
