US Open 2025 Live: Second round leaderboard and updates from golf's third major of the season at famed Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.

US OPEN ROUND THREE LIVE

Welcome to live second round updates from the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

Sam Burns made the big move of the day with a stunning 5-under 65.

To put that round in perspective, it was some nine shots better than the field average on day two.

The six-time PGA Tour winner vaulted up to 3-under par to assume a narrow one-shot lead over 18-hole leader JJ Spaun, who carded a 72.

Burns, who finished runner-up to Ryan Fox at the RBC Canadian Open last weekend, was a 66/1 tip from GolfMagic Editor Andy Roberts at the start of the week.

Viktor Hovland was another player to make a big push during Friday's second round.

Hovland carded a solid 68 to move to 1-under par.

Burns, Spaun and Hovland are the only three players in the red thru 36 holes.

Adam Scott and Ben Griffin make up the top five on level par.

Elsewhere, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler failed to fire with a 71 and he looks on from 4-over par.

That is safe for the weekend at least.

Scheffler headed straight to the range after his round and looked visibly frustrated with the state of his game as he ranted in front of his coach and caddie.

Rounds took over 5 hours 30 minutes in the second round, and that frustrated a lot of fans

Rory McIlroy narrowly made it through to the weekend after making birdie on the final hole for a 72.

McIlroy is nine shots off the pace though on 6-over par.

He lost his cool not once but twice in the second round.

McIlroy tomahawked his club on 12 and then smashed a tee box marker on 17.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau failed to progress to the weekend.

He slumped to a 77 to finish well down the field on 10-over par.

DeChambeau was one of a number of surprising names to miss the cut.

US OPEN ROUND 3 TEE TIMES

14 Jun 2025
16:13
Scheffler in danger of MC

Scheffler +5 (12*)

This is not turning into a good day for the World No.1, who makes yet another bogey.

An errant tee shot left - once again in to the Church Pews where he went twice yesterday - forces Scheffler to lay up on the par-4 3rd.

He then fails to get up and down from there and it's a fourth bogey of his second round.

Scheffler looks down and out at 5-over par.

That's nine off the pace, albeit leader Spaun has yet to tee off.

15:54
Some magic from Erik van Rooyen

The big South African has plenty of work to do if he wants to have a tee time tomorrow but he's just made a bit of a dent by chipping in at the par-4 10th...

15:50
Scheffler moves outside the projected cut

Hovland -3, Morikawa E, Scheffler +5 (10*)

The cut is likely to move, but as things stand Scottie Scheffler is going home.

The American slips to 5-over after taking three strokes to get down from the edge of the green at the par-4 1st.

15:44
Which players are in danger of missing the cut?

The US Open could be without some big names at the weekend.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy was among the high-profile players who struggled on day one at Oakmont.

McIlroy, 36, played the back nine first and appeared comfortable early doors by making the turn in 2-under par.

He drove the ball well, scrambled brilliantly at times and generally looked a completely different player to the one we saw in Canada.

But McIlroy looked as though he went 15 rounds with Mike Tyson after he trudged off the ninth green.

Four bogeys and a double bogey saw the Northern Irishman sign for a 4-over 74 which, at the time, was eight strokes adrift of the lead.

McIlroy wasn't the only name to struggle.

Koepka leaking oil

Koepka E (11*)

Three dropped shots in a row for Koepka after the American misses the second green with an iron in his hand.

Time for another tongue-lashing from his golf coach?

15:39
Super front nine from Hovland

Hovland -2, Morikawa E, Scheffler +4 (9*)

Viktor Hovland is looking great today. Sure, he's had a bit of luck, but the Norwegian looks completely in control of his game.

That hasn't been the case for many months and he would tell you as much.

He makes a bogey at the par-4 18th, but it's an impressive nine from  the  European Ryder Cup star.

15:26
Frustration building for Jon Rahm

Rahm +2, Spieth +5, Johnson +6 (9)

Rahm follows his bogey at the 8th with an errant tee shot.

The 2023 Masters champion had to play his second shot sideways after finding the rough with his drive.

A superb iron shot leaves the Spaniard eight feet to salvage a par but he misses again.

His temper is being challenged right now.

Jordan Spieth also drops a shot.

15:23
Another mistake from Brooks Koepka

Koepka -1 (10*)

Brooks Koepka pays the price for missing the fairway on the par-4 1st.

He's forced to chop his ball back into play and is left with a 34-footer for par after hitting his wedge into the heart of the green.

Koepka just breathes on his golf ball and it's perfectly judged, but that'll be another bogey.

15:21
Rahm bogey

Rahm +1 (9*)

The pin on the long par-3 8th is tucked at the back left of the green today.

Rahm's tee shot flies the front right bunker and settles in the rough.

The Spaniard hacks his ball onto the green but he cannot save par.

15:11
Koepka mistake

Koepa -2 Lee +8, Thomas +12 (9*)

Brooks Koepka is faced with a short putt for par to turn in an impressive 34 strokes.

But he just misses and drops back to 2-under.

Koepka's tee shot at the par-4 1st also appears to be destined for all sorts of trouble.

He's surely hacking out from here.

15:09
Dreadful from Scheffler

Hovland -3, Morikawa E, Scheffler +4 (8*)

Scheffler smashes a tee shot onto the green at the drivable par-4 17th.

Surely an easy birdie, right? Wrong. The best player in the world completely misjudges his eagle attempt, then knocks the birdie putt five feet past the cup.

He can't believe his eyes as his golf ball slides right on the comeback attempt.

Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland chips in for eagle and is now in a tie for second.

14:56
Sam Burns on the move

Burns -1 (8*)

Sam Burns is going along nicely today.

The American played his final four holes in round one in 5-over par, but has kept a clean card today.

His third birdie of the day arrives at the par-4 17th.

14:53
Scheffler makes a great save

Scheffler +3 (7*)

The best player in the world is being made to work today.

His tee shot at the par-3 16th just catches the first cut of rough.

The only problem is the green is on the other side of the green.

His bump and run eventually stops about 12 feet past the hole, but he's up to the task.

Scheffler remains level par.

14:47
Jon Rahm still working hard

Rahm E, Spieth +3, Johnson +6  (7)

Jon Rahm is still searching for his first birdie of the day.

He's got a great opportunity to get to 1-under at the 7th, but watches his effort just slide by the cup from around eight feet.

Spieth and Johnson also make pars.

Up next is the gargantuan par-3 8th...

14:42
Tyrrell Hatton drops back

Im E, Hatton +3, Straka +9 (6)

Tyrrell Hatton just made a birdie on the 5th hole but he's just given the shot straight back.

The Englishman finds the front bunker and cannot salvage his par from 11 feet at the par-3 6th.

14:39
Koepka chips in and moves to within one

Koepka -3 (8*)

Absolutely brilliant from Koepka at the short par-4 17th.

The American's tee shot settles just in front of the bunker and he goes for the high lob, but his golf ball gets snagged in the second cut of rough.

Not a problem, though, as he chips in from 17 feet to get to 3-under.

He's one behind JJ Spaun now.

14:36
An update from the USGA

We've just been alerted by the USGA that the greens will be running 'from the upper 14s to low 15s' on the Stimpmeter today.

"We double cut and double rolled all greens this morning," a spokesperson added.

14:26
Bogey for Koepka

Koepka -2 (7)

Koepka lets one slip on the par-4 15th.

He has just made par on 16.

Koepka two back.

13:50
Hovland on the charge

Hovland -1 (3*)

Hovland is making his move.

The Norwegian converts a second birdie in three holes on the par-5 12th to move into the red.

13:49
Burns to level par

Burns  Par (4*)

Burns hits the pin with his tee shot at the par-3 13th.

He sendsthe six-footer home for a second birdie in four holes.

Burns - my 66/1 each-way tip for you - is up to level par.

That's currently a tie for 10th.

13:34
Sloppy start for Spieth

Spieth +2 (3)

It's two early bogeys for Spieth.

After an opening 70, the 2015 US Open champion is back in the pack at 2-over par.

Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth
13:27
JT 3-jab from 3 feet

Thomas -+9 (3*)

Thomas is having a shocker.

JT has just four-putted the green at the par-5 12th.

He sent his 30 footer for birdie some three feet past the cup.

He then lipped up out twice from there.

It all added up to a double.

JT is 3-over thru three holes and down and out at 9-over par.

13:19
Birdie for Koepka

Koepka -3 (3*)

It's a good response from Koepka.

After a bogey at the 10th, he's replied with birdies on the 11th and 12th.

Koepka sends a missile into the right side of the green on the par-5 12th and he two-putted for birdie.

The five-time major champion is up to 3-under and in T2.

Ominous.

13:06
Incredible par from Scheffler

Scheffler +2 (2*)

Scheffler found trouble in the rough down the left flank.

His feet were right up against the lip of the bunker and he was forced to chip onto the fairway.

But the World No.1 then sent a stunning wedge shot beyond the pin and spun it back to kick-in distance for par.

A momentum-building par for Scheffler.

12:58
Scheffler birdie

Scheffler +2 (1*)

What's Scheffler's response on day two after a lacklustre 73 on Thursday?

A birdie at his first hole.

Scheffler curls in a 20-footer from right to left on the par-4 10th.
