Rory McIlroy surges clear of pack at BMW PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy raced to the top of the leaderboard on day two of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a blistering second-round 65.

McIlroy went to bed thinking of what might have been on day one after missing a tiddler for birdie at the 18th, but there was to be no ill feeling when he woke up on Friday as he raced to the turn in 32 shots to take sole possession of the lead.

The 2014 winner then parred 10 and 11 before rolling home four consecutive birdies from the 12th, highlighted by a 40-foot bomb at the tricky par-4 15th.

McIlroy would give the field some respite there on in, however, making pars into the clubhouse for a round of 7-under 65 and 12-under total - one stroke shy of the 36-hole PGA record set by Paul McGinley in 2008.

As things stand at 12.30 UK time, McIlroy holds a four-stroke lead over the chasing pack. 

Defending champion Alex Noren posted a 68 to progress to 7-under par. The Swede is bidding to become the first player to defend the PGA since Luke Donald in 2012. 

While McIlroy will certainly by focusing on just the victory this weekend, he will also have one eye on the 72-hole PGA record of 21-under par, set by Byeong-hun An in 2015.
