PGA of America provides update on 2027 US Ryder Cup captaincy call

Could Tiger Woods lead the 2027 US Ryder Cup team in Ireland? The PGA of America has set a timeline, but Woods says he's still in the dark.

Golf Channel has today confirmed the PGA of America expects to confirm the 2027 United States Ryder Cup captain in early 2026.

The update comes less than 24 hours after Tiger Woods admitted nobody from the PGA has yet asked him whether he wants to captain the US side at Adare Manor, Ireland, in September 2027.

Woods, who turns 50 in three weeks, previously declined the 2025 captaincy due to a packed schedule and persistent injury issues.

Yet he remains the bookmakers’ favourite to take on the role two years later — momentum strengthened by his candid comments to reporters ahead of the Hero World Challenge at Albany in The Bahamas.

For years, it has been widely assumed in golf circles that Woods would be offered the Ryder Cup captaincy whenever he wanted it.

Only Woods revealed that assumption currently has no basis.

When asked if he had been approached for the 2027 role at Adare Manor, the former World No.1 simply smiled: “No one’s asked me.”

That revelation surprised many given Woods’ stature, his experience as a playing captain at the 2019 Presidents Cup, and the fact he was long considered the favourite to lead the US team at Bethpage Black in 2025 before the role ultimately went to Keegan Bradley.

The 15-time major champion explained last year that increasing responsibilities in shaping the PGA Tour’s future meant he could not commit the necessary time for the 2025 captaincy.

Woods now chairs the PGA Tour’s influential Future Competition Committee, tasked with delivering a revamped Tour schedule for 2027 — another major commitment that could influence any Ryder Cup decision.

Even so, Woods remains one of the PGA of America’s most natural candidates for Adare Manor.

The PGA Tour superstar's close friendship with JP McManus, owner of the luxury Irish resort, only heightens that perception.

But for now, Woods insists he has not received so much as a courtesy call.

Pressed again by a reporter — “I’m asking you” — Woods reiterated: “No one’s asked me!”

He did, however, confirm he watched almost every shot of the 2025 Ryder Cup and stayed in close contact with Bradley’s side throughout their loss to Luke Donald’s Europe at Bethpage Black.

“I watched pretty much all of it and was talking to the players and the captains involved in it, everyone involved on the US side.”

And with that, Woods offered nothing more.

The bookmakers, however, have responded decisively.

Woods' odds have now shortened to 7/2 joint favourite to become the 2027 US Ryder Cup captain.

Adding to the growing anticipation, Golf Channel is reporting today that a spokesperson told them: "It's our hope to identify the 2027 US Ryder Cup captain by the first quarter of next year."

Woods has previously served as a Ryder Cup vice captain (2016) and captained the US Presidents Cup team in 2019.

Bradley, for his part, has expressed interest in remaining captain — though he still views Woods as the natural choice.

"I think if Tiger wants to do this, he's going to do it," said Bradley, who skippered the Americans to that 15–13 defeat in late September.

"Tiger is not only a hero to all of us that would be on his team, but he's also an incredible leader and a person that everyone would love to play for. But I'm pretty sure when he wants to do this, he's going to get to be able to do it."

Other potential candidates include Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Webb Simpson, and Brandt Snedeker.

But by most accounts — Bradley’s remarks, the odds makers’ moves, and the PGA’s looming timeline — it still feels like Woods remains the central figure in the conversation.

Who do you think will skipper the next US Ryder Cup team?

Will it be Woods?

Should it be Woods?
