PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth provides injury update ahead of The Open
PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth has confirmed that he has fully recovered from a neck injury that forced him to withdraw from the Travelers Championship.
PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth has confirmed he is fully recovered from a neck injury ahead of The Open.
Spieth was carted off the golf course last month at the Travelers Championship after it was apparent he was in significant pain.
The American dropped to his knees and let out an audible groan after he hit a loose drive on the 13th hole.
Considering the stop at TPC River Highlands was a signature event without a cut, the withdrawal sparked fears the injury was quite bad.
It was the first time in 297 starts that the three-time major champion, now 31, was forced to quit a PGA Tour event.
Spieth has now confirmed the upper back/neck injury was 'just a weird neck spasm thing'.
The golfer told Kay Adams on the Up and Adams Show on Monday that he's good to go for the final men's major of the year at Royal Portrush.
Although he is not in the field for this week's Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.
"I knew it was going to be short-lived, I've been back to full strength getting ready for The Open," Spieth said.
"Then we have our playoffs after that, so a lot of big events left. I have no restrictions."
Spieth was referring to the FedEx Cup playoffs which begin in August, starting with the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush will represent his 12th consecutive appearance in golf's oldest major.
He has never missed the cut at The Open and finished in a share for 20th the last time it was held at Portrush in 2019.
Spieth won The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017 and has failed to add to his tally of three major wins since then.
His last win on the PGA Tour arrived at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in 2022.
He is currently ranked 48th in the OWGR and is 25th in the US Ryder Cup standings.
He needs to win the PGA Championship to complete the career grand slam.

Spieth not the only big name missing from Scottish Open
It's a huge week at The Renaissance Club as a stacked field gets some much-needed practice on a links golf course ahead of The Open.
World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is joined in the field by Masters champion Rory McIlroy, two-time major winner Xander Schauffele and reigning US Open champion JJ Spaun.
Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Brian Harman, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg and Adam Scott all feature.
World No. 14 Robert MacIntyre is back to defend the title he won in dramatic circumstances 12 months ago.
Spieth has made the decision not to enter and risk injury ahead of next week.
But there are several notables that have also decided to skip the Scottish Open.
Former Open champion Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Patrick Cantlay, Russell Henley, Min Woo Lee and Jason Day aren't in the field.
