Rory McIlroy sealed his 26th PGA Tour victory on Sunday with a commanding win at the Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy, 35, began the final round at Quail Hollow Club trailing American Xander Schauffele by a single shot but overturned the deficit to eventually win by five.

The world number two started his final day slowly and was level par for his round, standing on the 8th tee before he switched gears in an effort to catch his playing partner.

He then went on to put on a golfing clinic, with birdies on both the 8th and 9th holes and a stunning eagle on the 10th.

By that point, Schauffele's hopes of victory had begun to fade, with back-to-back bogeys on the 12th and 13th all but confirming McIlroy's Victory.

Clearly in the mood, McIlroy then duly applied the finishing touches to his dominant victory with an additional two birdies on the 13th and 14th before making his second eagle of the day on the par five 15th to dramatically extend his lead.

Despite his heroics, McIlroy did make one big error on the 18th hole, sending his second shot long into the water behind the green.

The mistake eventually led to a double bogey, but not even that was enough to wipe the smile off his face as the winning putt dropped.

With the PGA Championship now only a matter of days away, McIlroy's confidence will be sky-high, and with back-to-back PGA Tour wins under his belt, he will be aiming to lift his fifth major championship and third PGA Championship title.

If McIlroy is to succeed at Valhalla this week, he will likely need to beat current world number one Scottie Scheffler to do so.

With Sports Illustrated reporter Bob Harig recently confirming the birth of his first child, Scheffler's attention will likely now return to winning his fifth tournament of the year and a third major championship.

Every aspect of McIlroy's game was in fine form at Quail Hollow, and he finished the week ranked first for strokes gained off the tee (6.117), fourth for strokes gained approach (6.253), ninth for strokes gained around the green (3.274), and eighth for strokes gained putting (4.282).
