Rickie Fowler was involved in an hilarious exchange with a heckler during the second round of the 2023 US Open.

To the surprise of the golf world, 34-year-old Fowler found himself centre stage at Los Angeles Country Club.

A resurgent Fowler raced into the 36-hole lead having posted a record-breaking 8-under 62 in the first round.

He showed that was not just a flash in the pan by battling his way to a second round of 68.

We're sure you know by now Fowler has fought back from the abyss. Whatever happens from here, it's been incredible to see him back in the groove.

Because in recent years Fowler has barely played in the majors.

He hasn't played at Augusta National since 2020. He missed the cut at the 2023 PGA Championship.

And the last time he played the US Open came three years ago when he tied for 49th.

One of the reasons why Fowler's popularity has never waned is because of his apparent authenticity.

If you needed evidence of that, look no further than this exchange Fowler had with a fan during his second round.

It transpired on the par-3 seventh hole and after he left his birdie putt well short, a fan yelled: "What are you doing?!"

What cannot be determined is exactly what Fowler said in response. Some have claimed he said 'leading the f***ing US Open' but it's not clear.

Still, Fowler took the chirp well in his stride and was absolutely nonchalant throughout the entire exchange.

Watch the clip here:

After the round, Fowler was asked why he was so popular with the fans. He paused and said:

"I wish there was an exact answer. I'm not sure. I never planned to have kids want to look up to me or follow me or anything like that.
"I feel like I've always been myself, and I don't try and do anything different or be anyone else.
"I sure hope I come off as genuine. I feel like I'm just me being myself out here and love what I get to do.
"I do feel like kids or the youth are very good judges of character, so I'm going to take that as a compliment that a lot of kids do look up to me."
