Rory McIlroy says he just needs to execute his game plan just one more time to end his major drought as he heads into the final round of the US Open trailing the leaders by one stroke.

McIlroy carded a 1-under 69 to move one shot behind Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark on Saturday at Los Angeles Country Club.

Fowler bogeyed the last to move into a share for the lead with fellow American Clark. The duo sit at 10-under.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is three strokes back at 7-under after posting a 68.

LIV Golf players Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau are also inside the top-10.

"It's been such a long time since I've done it. I'm going out there to try to execute a game plan, and I feel like over the last three days I've executed that game plan really, really well, and I just need to do that for one more day."

He added:

"The scoring was surprisingly low over the first couple of days, but it doesn't look or feel like any of the other three major championships.
"I think it's definitely -- the U.S. Open has definitely got its own identity, and I think that identity was pretty strong from the opening tee shot on Thursday."

Asked about his nerves, Fowler said:

"I would say this week, this is the best I've felt all year and definitely in a long time. We all feel nerves at times, depending on certain shots or circumstances, but I mentioned it yesterday and then still stand by it.
"This is the best I've felt, let alone in a normal tournament but especially a major, and I would say really ever in my career."
