Rory McIlroy reveals plan of attack with TaylorMade driver in Truist Championship title defence
PGA Tour superstar Rory McIlroy intends to hit driver everywhere at Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Rory McIlroy has revealed he plans to bash his TaylorMade driver just about everywhere around Philadelphia Cricket Club, the new venue for this week's $20m Signature Event on the PGA Tour.
Formerly the Wells Fargo Championship before that sponsor parted ways with the PGA Tour this season, the Truist Championship is this week being staged on the Wissahickon Course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The tournament's normal home, Quail Hollow Club, known by Jordan Spieth as 'Rory McIlroy Country Club', is instead getting ready to host next week's PGA Championship.
McIlroy, 36, who has won the Truist a record four times, explained last month he was seeking a wood that could carry 300 yards to be short of some necks in the fairways.
When asked if this week's new PGA Tour stop was a course he's still looking for that club, McIlroy shook his head and declared all-out attack mode at Philly Cricket Club.
"Yeah, you can send it here," said McIlroy, who ranks third in driving distance on the PGA Tour this season with an average of 317.5 yards.
"Every bunker seems to be about 300 to 310 to carry, which is thankfully fine.
"There's one bunker on 9 that's 331, but it's down like 10, so it's like 320 equivalent. That's the longest one to try to get over. In good conditions I can, if it's calm or a little bit of help. So yeah, it's basically open season.
"The way -- I go back to Oak Hill a couple years ago at the PGA, and I tried to play the golf course strategically over the first couple of days, and I just realized that these new renovated old school courses, like the strategy is just hit driver everywhere and then figure it out from there.
"That's sort of the strategy of this place this week."

McIlroy still has the TaylorMade QI10 Driver in his bag, along with a Qi10 3-wood this season.
He is still testing out the latest TaylorMade Qi35 Driver but still feels more comfortable with the all-round performance of his Qi10.
Elsewhere in McIlroy's bag of TaylorMade goodies, he uses a P760 4-iron and Rors Proto irons from 5-9.
McIlroy has been using the ‘RORS•PROTO' irons since he signed with the leading OEM in 2017.
Last week TaylorMade confirmed they were now selling a limited set of McIlroy's irons to celebrate his Masters success and him becoming the sixth player in the history of the men's game to complete the career grand slam.
McIlroy also continues to use MG4 wedges, a Spider Tour X putter and a TP5 golf ball.
