The inaugural LIV Golf season has now come to a close and it was Dustin Johnson who quite simply cleaned house, earning more than $35m.

Johnson announced his resignation from the PGA Tour in June ahead of LIV's curtain-raising event at Centurion Club just outside of London.

At the time, other than the financial incentive, it represented a huge risk due to threats of bans from the PGA Tour and even the major championships.

Since then it is fair to say the sport has essentially torn itself apart. It's all got a bit heated and at times personal.

Players like Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have taken centre stage.

But one thing has remained a constant: money

You could of course argue that's what this is really all about.

There has been an obscene amount of money dished out by LIV's Saudi backers. They have pledged to invest $2billion in the hopes of getting LIV well and truly off the ground.

The breakaway tour's plan is to eventually recoup their investment and start turning a profit by getting a much-coveted TV deal while selling off the teams as franchises.

LIV have already got a transfer window now and the aforementioned Johnson has already made one change, axing Talor Gooch.

But back to why you are here, the money!

In total, LIV Golf's first season saw seven $25m events take place and one $50m tournament which was the season-ending team championship at Trump National Doral which was won by Johnson's 4 Aces GC side.

Johnson is said to have commanded a signing on-fee in the region of $125m when he decided to leave the PGA Tour.

Overall, he topped LIV Golf's highest earners in 2022 with by scooping a whopping $35,637,767. That includes his $18m bonus for becoming LIV's inaugural champion in the points race.

No wonder his glamourous wife Paulina Gretzky packed on the PDA when he won

Johnson has joked that he has regretted his decision.
