Rory McIlroy says he's looking forward to getting back to being 'purely a golfer' after he missed the cut at the Players Championship

McIlroy, 33, missed the cut by three strokes at TPC Sawgrass after shotting 76-73.

A sign of just how 'off' McIlroy was came during his second round when he managed to putt his TP5x off the green.

McIlroy faced the media after bowing out of the 2023 Players at the halfway stage where he described the place as an 'enigma'.

The 2019 champion said his week as very 'blah', adding:

"Yeah, I guess the course, you just have to be really on to play well here. If you're a little off, it definitely magnifies where you are off. It is, it's a bit of an enigma. Some years I come here, and like it feels easier than others.
"It's just a tricky golf course, and you don't hit fairways and you've got your work cut out for you."

He continued:

"I actually don't feel like I'm playing that badly at all. A few miscues here and there, putted it off the 6th green yesterday, and just stuff that -- just a little untidy here and there. But hit the ball okay. Just, as I said, this course if you're a little off definitely just magnifies where you are."

McIlroy has taken centre stage over the last 12 months as the PGA Tour found itself embroiled in a 'civil war' with the LIV Golf League

Earlier in the week McIlroy finally conceded the PGA's Saudi-backed rival led by Greg Norman had benefitted every elite professional golfer.

His comments came off the back of an announcement to revamp the designated events in 2024 that will see reduced fields and no cuts.

McIlroy said:

"I'd love to get back to being a golfer, yeah. Look, it's been a busy couple of weeks, and it's been -- honestly it's been a busy sort of six or eight months.
"But as I said at the start of the week, everything has sort of been announced now, and the wheels have been put in motion, so it should obviously quieten down from here.

McIlroy switched to the new TaylorMade driver after the first round at the Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods a few weeks ago.

The Ulsterman turned heads when he said he wished he could go back to using the old one after his first round here.

He stressed there was quite a lot of 'user error'. Once again, McIlroy said he wished he could go back to the old. "It is what it is," he said.

McIlroy said he is going to Augusta National next week in preparation for The Masters. He has confirmed he is skipping the Match Play.
