Will the players who have joined LIV Golf be able to play?

Yes

What is the controversy around LIV Golf?

The LIV Golf Invitational Series is a new league that is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Critics suggest they are trying to soften their reputation by “sportswashing” with a view to increasing their GDP over the next 10 years.

Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau are the biggest names who have defied the PGA Tour in playing in these tournaments where each of the eight events has a prize purse of $25million each.

Rory McIlroy says the new league has fractured professional golf. It is unknown whether the LIV Golf players will be able to participate in future majors.

Is Phil Mickelson playing?

Yes. Lefty returned to golf at the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series opener at Centurion Club in St. Albans, England, last week.

Who is the favourite to win?

Rory McIlroy.

What are the tee times?

What is the cut?

The top 60 players and ties after Friday’s second round advance to the weekend.

How much money are they playing for?

The total prize purse is $17.5million, which is up last year by $5million.

What will the winner receive?

The winner will receive $3.15million.

What is the weather forecast?

Dry and hot, with temperatures soaring up to the high 80s. There is a breeze of 10-20mph anticipated for Thursday morning but it is otherwise calm.

Why isn’t Tiger Woods playing?

Tiger Woods decided to withdraw from the 2022 US Open, saying his body was not ready.

Woods returned to major championship golf at the 86th Masters in April.

It was 14 months after he was involved in a near-fatal car crash.

Woods made the cut at Augusta National and also at Southern Hills at the US PGA but looked in visible anguish so withdrew on the eve of the final round.

Woods is committed to playing the JP McManus Pro-Am at Ireland’s Adare Manor in July before the landmark 150th Open Championship at St Andrews.

What happens if there is a playoff?

A playoff to settle any ties after 72 holes will be played under rules different than the PGA Tour.

The US Open playoff format is a two-hole, aggregate-score format, with holes 1 and 18 played.

The player with the lowest combined score on those two playoff holes wins.

If the players are tied after the aggregate playoff, then it becomes a sudden death, played hole-by-hole until a winner is determined.

What else does the winner get?

The winning player will get a five-year PGA Tour exemption and a 10-year exemption into the US Open.

The winner is exempt into the next five editions of the remaining PGA majors.

The winner earns 600 FedEx Cup points.
